About Baja-Mex

Providing Mexican Insurance Since 1974

Baja-Mex Insurance Services, Inc. was founded by Fred B. Sobke and Jesus Monzon in 1974. Fred B. Sobke graduated from San Diego State University in 1974 with a degree in accounting from the business school at San Diego State University. Jesus Monzon graduated from Cal Poly Pomona in 1974 with a degree in architecture.

Baja-Mex started with a 100 square foot drive-thru office in San Ysidro with only a few employees. Fred and Jesus saw a need for Mexican Insurance at the U.S. border, and started assisting tourists traveling to Mexico. Buying Mexican Insurance has never been easier since the drive-through concept started.

Our Mexican Insurance is now available online and is quick and easy to purchase.

Milestones in Business

In 2005, Baja-Mex Insurance Services, Inc. was awarded Business of the Year from the San Diego Business Improvement District. There was a competition in the nineteen districts in San Diego County for business of the year, and Baja-Mex won for its longevity, staying power, and community service in the San Diego area.

In 1984, Baja-Mex acquired a parcel on the east side of the San Ysidro Port of Entry, and started a pay parking lot for tourists traveling to Mexico. Travelers to Baja can leave their cars securely parked adjacent to the pedestrian border crossing in San Ysidro.

In 1996, we started our first currency exchange to serve tourists traveling to Mexico.
